If you haven’t been sleeping under a rock and have followed the SEO news then you have probably heard about the Google Penguin update, if you have been following the news very closely you probably know that there was released a lots of smaller updates to the Google Penguin update.

Boy oh boy did it get messy after the Penguin update. So many people lost their businesses overnight, websites with a lot of traffic suddenly disappeared from the search engines and so did the traffic. At first only one of my sites got hit by the penguin, but eventually my main one got hit too, but not that hard (haven’t yet fully recovered).

Well I could have avoided the penalties, if I had known what was the update about and it was about backlinks. Google Penguin update made almost all of the backlink building techniques obsolete. You can get penalized for building bad backlinks. You can also get penalized for not varying the anchor text of your backlinks. Basically building backlinks is risky nowadays, but there still is one link building technique that works.

Link Baiting

Yep link baiting, it’s the only real link building technique by which Google gets turned on. You can’t call it a new thing, it really is just a back to basics thing, but building backlinks this way is very hard work that’s why it got abandoned in the first place and replaced by other spammy link building techniques.

But these days there’s almost no other way to build backlinks. So, you should really consider some link baiting techniques.

#1 Infographics

People love infographics. People just love infographics. People totally dig them. So, you should consider spending your SEO budget to hire someone to create infographics or create them yourself. Infographics will definitely bait some links for you.

#2 Giving Something For Free

For this to work you need to create something that people wants and likes, if you fail at this it wont work. Once you have something that they are in need give to them in exchange for a Like, Tweet or share. Or you could just give it out and expect people to link to it, but for that you need an even better freebie.

#3 Controversial

If you don’t want to create the above mentioned things and you want to stick with blog posts then you should start writing controversial blog posts to get yourself some backlinks. Plain old blog posts don’t get backlinks you need to create controversial, sexy, fun, teasing, different blog posts, if you want to bait backlinks.

#4 Videos

You are more likely to get backlinks, if instead of writing a blog post you will shoot a video. They are more likely to get consumed and if they are fun and entertaining they will get shared and backlinked.

Basically of you want to bait some links you need to create something new, different, fun, controversial, unusual etc. And it has to rock. So, if you are writing blog posts stop concentrating on quantity better put some thought into one good blog post which could potentially be a link bait.
