Excuse my language, but I couldn’t put it better than this. In the last post I mentioned that I’m having problems. I got like a third of the usual traffic. I’m not really sure why that happened, I have only a few guesses why this happened. First, because of the broken links on my blog. Secondly and more likely, because I got 3 PR 3 and 4 backlinks with the anchor text ” internet marketing “.

Two months ago these 3 backlinks would have given me a traffic increase and now they gave me a penalty (probably). This is why SEO is you know what. The last Google Penguin update is just a horrible beast. My other blog is still fighting with it. It got smacked by the first wave of penalties then it got recovered for some time then smacked again, recovered for 3 days and now smacked again.

My main blog (this one) haven’t been affected by this algorithm update until today…

This penguin has teeth of a shark, a real beast. You see it penalizes you for backlinks, if you have too much of one kind of backlink you will get penalized. I think this is crazy, because you might get backlinks from places that you have no control over them and that might mean a penalty for you.

After this update you can even get set up. Someone who understands this can build a gazillion non-diversified backlinks to your site and get you penalized on purpose. That would be nasty competition.

Now I haven’t heard that happening to anyone, but I think this could happen in the future.

Just today I watched a webinar about SEO. In the webinar they suggested to have a diversified backlink profile and a few days ago I have watched another presentation about SEO which went even further. You have to have a diversified backlink profile which goes like this: 40% brand backlinks, for example http://www.imz6.com , imz6.com, imz6 etc. 40% of generic backlinks, for example click this, check this out, click here etc. and just 20% of backlinks that have a keyword in the anchor text for example internet marketing, affiliate marketing, make money etc.

By having too much of one kind of backlink you get penalized. Fun, huh?

If you want to play safe then avoid building backlinks with keywords or avoid building backlinks at all for that matter. I think a new website is better set up SEO wise than any website that has been building backlinks in the past and already has a reputation. Not doing SEO might be the new SEO, but if you got hit that isn’t an option for you.

Now I heard “good” news in the webinar that a new bigger, badder penguin update is coming in the end of summer. Now there aren’t that many days left or was the update today and that’s why I got penalized? Well, I don’t know, I don’t really follow the SEO news, but I usually find out about them.

To wrap this up, SEO is a bitch and what are you going to do about it?
